Industry Interview: The Benefits of Using Vegan Makeup Products

If you’re a beauty enthusiast, then chances are you’ve heard of vegan makeup. While certainly the essential alternative for those following a plant-based diet, vegan makeup products offer incredible benefits that all makeup users can appreciate.

We’ve asked top health-conscious makeup artists and bloggers to share their opinion of vegan makeup and all of its many benefits that may just convert you to the makeup that cares.

Vegan Makeup Provides Options for Health and Lifestyle Limitations

For those trying to achieve a healthier lifestyle, vegan makeup products offer a way to extend their healthy commitments into more areas of their life. DeChantell, vegan and founder of Living Well with DeChantell, realized that veganism is more than just the food she eats and loves that she can support this statement with her favorite vegan lip gloss and nail polish. “As I became more educated in my vegan journey, I figured it was time to progress in other areas of my life because it is essentially a lifestyle.”

In addition to being free from animal-derived ingredients, many vegan products are gluten-free which is essential for those who suffer from celiac disease and other skin conditions. According to makeup artist and editor at the Foundation Fairy, Sandy Taylor, the lack of harmful, toxic ingredients like parabens in vegan products also appeals to those without health or diet restrictions. “(Vegan/gluten-free makeup) gives peace of mind knowing that the products they are using are natural and healthy” says Taylor.

Vegan Products Support Animal Welfare

As you may already know, vegan products not only offer safer ingredients for one’s physical health, but they can also offer something for one’s conscience.

Vegan makeup specialist Christine Heggestad from Living Clean with Christine made the switch to cruelty-free products after discovering the mistreatment animals endure in labs. “As I became more and more committed to animal welfare and rights, I realized that wasn’t just conveying the importance of the “spay-neuter” cause. Learning how animals were treated in labs to test health and beauty products I realized I couldn’t be part of that any longer. It’s horrifying.”

Luckily for those who want to promote animal welfare, more and more companies are choosing to make their products cruelty-free without animal testing, according to Ben Williamson, a spokesman from PETA.

Vegan Products Promote Beautiful Skin and Eco-Awareness

Vegan makeup products tend to leave out the harsh ingredients found in non-vegan makeup which has proven to be quite beneficial for many people. “I strive to live as naturally as possible, so this is another reason I love using vegan and gluten free makeup. Oftentimes, they include ingredients that actually benefit your skin/complexion,” says Heggestad.

Sandy Taylor, for example, has witnessed the change in her clients’ skin after transitioning to vegan products. “(Vegan)/gluten free products simply work and don’t trigger any symptoms. Others who have transitioned into vegan products noticed that their skin looked more healthy than before. This may be due to vegan products being natural and nutrient-rich,” says Taylor.

When it comes to combining values with beauty, vegan makeup leads the way. In addition to being ethical and non-toxic, many vegan makeup products are also packaged in recycled material.

“I specifically look for vegan makeup when purchasing products because you feel better knowing that it makes a global impact,” says DeChantell.
