Did you know that there are almost 2 million cats, dogs, and small animals in households in the U.S.? That’s a lot of love for our furry friends! Animals have become a part of our families. And love of animals and mindfulness of their safety and well-being is growing by leaps and bounds.
Sixty billion dollars on our pets—that’s how much we spent in just one year. And our love of animals can extend way beyond buying habits. No matter how small the critter, it seems everyone wants to help prevent senseless suffering of animals.
An excellent way to use your credit cards and e-wallets to make the world a better place is to seek out cruelty-free cosmetics. Twenty-five years ago, it wasn’t quite so easy to find them. Plus, there was limited consumer awareness about the prevalent and cruel practice of animal testing.
But what a world of difference two decades make! Just like you, Cake Angels, consumers now actively and (relatively easily) seek out cruelty-free cosmetic shops. Being socially conscious, whether it’s being aware of global warming, animal rights, eco-friendly practices—they’re all becoming a part of our lives.
More and more countries are putting legislation into place to prevent animal testing on cosmetics and beauty products. ‘Enviresponsible’ products are available for everything from building materials, to nail polish to cars. And as demand for merchandise like cruelty-free cosmetics grows, so do options and thus prices drop. But most of us animal-lovers have no problem paying a little more for something we believe in (plus there’s a huge range of products to choose from). As of today, roughly 600 beauty brands are recognized as cruelty-free.
Consumers now meticulously read labels, and they care about what goes into and onto their bodies. And that includes avoiding anything that’s been tested on animals. Being aware, reading labels or checking out a company’s website—it’s simple to find luxury products, drugstore brands, cutting-edge innovative creations—all cruelty-free.
It’s important to know what you’re applying to your skin. And how each element came to be part of the product you’re using. If you’re not sure about a brand, look for the cute little cruelty–free bunny logo! Or contact the company.
There are plenty of ingredients that are natural and have no need to be tested at all. And honestly, wouldn’t you rather use something on your face that’s natural? If something needs to be tested for safety, doesn’t it give you pause for concern when you’re putting it on your face/lips/eyelids? Just look for the little pink bunny when choosing cosmetics.
Consumers (like you!) are making a difference by changing their buying habits. Your purchasing decisions can affect a company’s choice to test on animals. And you’ll feel good about making the world a better place for innocent animals that deserve respect. Really, how can you trust someone who doesn’t love animals? Why would you want to give your money to a company that doesn’t see the value of all living things’ well being?
Scientists have come around to the idea that testing ingredients on animals may not be the most accurate way to determine its safety. Artificial human skin can be grown in the lab and used to test ingredients and their potential irritations. It may sound a bit macabre, but it’s a straightforward and painless way to find out if an ingredient is possibly dangerous. Human skin is human skin. Testing on other mammals, especially the mega-doses that are frequently used, just isn’t intrinsically factual in terms of similar reactions to humans.
On the other hand, many countries are banning animal-testing altogether. So progress is being made. With awareness has come change. The world isn’t perfect, but huge strides have been made to replace archaic testing with better and kinder methodologies to determine safety. Scientists have questioned the status quo as more people become aware of the senseless torture of innocent animals. Cruelty-free cosmetics have become mainstream.
